Originally known as Sujtu, a Chumash village in pre-colonial times, Carpinteria earns its name from the canoe-building enterprise of the Indians who lived on the land. Famous for its vintage and antique stores, Carpinteria is home to some of the nicest shops, restaurants, and businesses in the Santa Barbara area. Get started with surf adventures by gearing up with a custom-shaped surfboard at Rincon Design, one of the oldest shops in town, owned by Matt Moore whose surfing experiences over the decades has lent to the shop its sophistication and perfect craft. Another long-time local shop, Robitaille's Fine Candies is a must-visit for anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. Pop in for handmade chocolates, sugar-free candy, and sweets of all kinds.
Little Dom’s Seafood is the idyllic spot chef-driven seafood dishes, including Squid Ink Mafaldine, smothered in spicy butter, carpaccio, and sea bass. Meet up with friends at Island Brewery for happy moments spent over delicious beer, and of course, you can’t run out of amazing seafood restaurants in this coastal town, so be sure to stop by Teddy’s By the Sea for yummy clam chowder and flights of margarita.
Things to Do
First weekends in October buzz with the activities of Avocado Festival, one of the largest free festivals in California with dozens of music acts and tens of thousands of attendees united in celebration of all things avocado. Find a selection of fresh baked goods, newly harvested veggies, eggs, and artisanal produce at Carpinteria’s afternoon Farmer’s Market on Linden Avenue.
In July, the St. Joseph Church’s Annual Festival brings families and friends together with thrilling rides for every age, live entertainment, and festival food delights, including tacos, BBQ, and enchiladas. Stroll along the sugary white sand shoreline of Santa Claus Beach and jump into its gentle waves for some water sport activities.
The famous Carpinteria State Beach is one of the safest swimming destinations in America, frequented by families, couples, and youngsters looking for quality beach time on its clean shores and calm waters. Camp out at its quaint oceanfront Camping Grounds, and set out for a scenic hike along the Franklin Hiking Trail.
